Since the start of the school year in September, Elsa McGregor has held the position of Prime Minister of the Student Parliament at École secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa). As part of her role, this grade 11 student also sits on the Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon Student Senate. This political committee, which serves as a forum for the Prime Ministers of CSC Nouvelon’s nine secondary schools, provides a space for exchanges and engaging students in their success as part of efforts to promote French-language Catholic education.
 
"As a member of the Student Senate, I have the opportunity to be a voice for École secondaire Saint-Joseph,” stated Elsa McGregor. I am proud to have the opportunity to make a difference and to help my school in return as it has done so much for me."

 

 

La Première ministre de l’ÉS Saint-Joseph est fière d’être une voix pour son école

 

Depuis le mois de septembre, Elsa McGregor occupe le poste de Première ministre du Parlement des élèves de l’École secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa). Dans le cadre de ses fonctions, cette élève de 11e année fait également partie du Sénat des élèves du Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon. Ce comité politique, qui sert de forum pour les Premiers ministres des neuf écoles secondaires du CSC Nouvelon, favorise les échanges et engage les élèves dans leur réussite de façon à promouvoir l’éducation catholique de langue française.

 

« Être membre du Sénat des élèves me permet de donner une voix aux élèves de l’École secondaire Saint-Joseph, » explique Elsa McGregor. Je suis fière d’avoir l’opportunité de faire une différence et d’aider mon école en retour puisqu’elle a fait beaucoup pour moi. »

ÉS Saint-Joseph basketball and volleyball teams move on to championship finals

 

Congratulations to the ÉS Saint-Joseph (Wawa) Chevaliers sports teams! Their senior and junior boys' basketball teams as well as their senior girls' volleyball team have qualified for the North Shore High School Athletic Association championship. The senior boys will go into the final undefeated since the start of the regular season, while the junior boys and girls volleyball team are currently in 2nd place in their respective categories. These determined young athletes have fought hard throughout the sports season, and the school community can't wait to cheer them on at the matches in Chapleau next week. Well done, Chevaliers!

 

 

Les équipes de volleyball et de basketball de l’ÉS Saint-Joseph se qualifient pour les championnats

 

Félicitations aux Chevaliers de l’ÉS Saint-Joseph (Wawa)! Leurs équipes masculines de basketball senior et junior ainsi que leur équipe féminine de volleyball senior se sont qualifiées pour le championnat de l’Association athlétique des écoles secondaires de la Rive Nord. Les garçons seniors se rendront en finale alors qu’ils sont invaincus depuis de début de la saison régulière tandis que les garçons de l’équipe junior et l’équipe de volleyball féminin se trouvent présentement en 2e place dans leur catégorie respective. Ces jeunes athlètes déterminés ont combattu avec force tout au long de la saison sportive et la communauté scolaire est impatiente de les encourager lors des matchs à Chapleau à la semaine prochaine. Bravo les Chevaliers!

ÉSC Trillium students visit the Borden Gold Mine and discover the mining sector

 

On January 24, grade 12 students at École secondaire catholique Trillium (Chapleau) registered in the technology course and interested in pursuing a career in the mining sector enjoyed a great field trip. The students were offered a visit of the Borden Gold Mine near Chapleau. As part of this tour of Goldcorp's operations, the students had the chance to ask questions and observe experts at work both above and below surface.

 

They met the head of underground operations, who, from his office and in front of 12 screens, manages the ventilation system, pumps and heavy machinery, among other things. Afterwards, the ÉSC Trillium group was able to watch an operator remotely operate a huge underground scooptram, visit the garage and talk to several surface mechanics.

 

A captain, a supervisor and the chief mechanic then drove the students and their teacher in a mining truck to the underground installations, where they stopped at a sub station and questioned electricians. Once 580 metres underground, the captain allowed each student, one at a time and with the support of an operator, to use a drill and a bolter to install a rock bolt. Before returning to the surface, the students visited the underground garage where they observed the operation of a scooptram.

 

The students were delighted with the outing, which gave them an insight into the mining sector.

Le 24 janvier, des élèves de 12e année de l’École secondaire catholique Trillium (Chapleau) inscrits dans le cours de technologie et intéressés à poursuivre une carrière dans le secteur minier ont profité d’une superbe sortie scolaire. En effet, les élèves ont eu droit à une tournée de la mine d’or Borden située près de Chapleau. Dans le cadre de cette visite des opérations de la compagnie minière Goldcorp, les élèves ont eu la chance de questionner et de voir les experts à l’œuvre aussi bien à la surface que sous terre.

 

Durant la journée, ils ont rencontré le chef des opérations. Installé dans son bureau devant 12 écrans, il gère, entre autres, le système de ventilation, les pompes et la machinerie lourde. Par la suite, le groupe de l’ÉSC Trillium a pu observer un opérateur contrôler à distance une immense chargeuse souterraine (scooptram), visiter le garage et s’entretenir avec plusieurs mécaniciens.

 

Un capitaine, un superviseur et le chef mécanicien ont par la suite conduit les élèves et leur enseignant dans un camion minier dans les installations souterraines où ils ont fait un arrêt à un poste de contrôle et questionné des électriciens. Une fois rendu à 580 mètres sous terre, le capitaine a permis à chaque élève, à tour de rôle et avec l’appui du responsable, d’opérer foreuse et boulonneuse afin de percer et installer un boulon dans la surface rocheuse. Avant de remonter à la surface, les élèves sont passés par le garage souterrain afin d’observer l’opération d’une chargeuse souterraine.

 

Les élèves étaient épatés de cette sortie qui leur a permis de découvrir le secteur minier.

If you have heard a rumour that dinosaurs have invaded the school yard at École Saint-Joseph (Wawa).... well, it is true! The school's youngest students were recently visited by four playful and friendly dinosaurs during playtime. The students were amazed and delighted to spend this little moment of happiness with their new friends from the Mesozoic era! Without a doubt, all children must have had many great stories to share with their parents that evening when they returned home from school.

Si vous entendez une rumeur que des dinosaures ont envahi la cour de l’école Saint-Joseph (Wawa)…. et bien, c’est vrai! Les plus jeunes de l'école ont tout récemment reçu la visite de quatre dinosaures taquins lors d’une récréation. Les élèves étaient émerveillés et très heureux de passer ce petit moment de bonheur avec leurs nouveaux amis de l'ère Mésozoïque! Que de belles histoires les enfants ont pu partager avec leurs parents une fois à la maison après cette rencontre préhistorique incroyable.

Since the start of the school year in September, Emmanuel Boucher has held the position of co-Prime Minister of the Student Parliament at École secondaire catholique Trillium (Chapleau). "I am happy to be a member of the Student Senate because I enjoy creating activities for the students at École secondaire catholique Trillium and having fun. I also enjoy representing my school at the school board level and in the community. Together with my Student Parliament team, I want to help develop my school for years to come," stated Emmanuel Boucher.

(Sault Ste Marie, ON)  For 15 years, the Sault North Rotary Club has conducted its "Trip of the Month" fundraiser.  From the draw's proceeds, the club funds, among other initiatives, youth leadership development, psychological assessments for children, and school breakfast programs in partnership with USW LU 2251.  Most recently, Neil McLean, President of Rotary Club of SSM North presented $5000 to Algoma District School Board’s Robotics program.  Rotary has made a commitment of donating this amount for three years.  To learn more about Rotary and the Sault North Club, visit SaultNorthRotary.ca.

 

Algoma District School Board’s Chair Jennifer Sarlo and Director of Education Lucia Reece gratefully accepted the donation from Neil McLean, President, Rotary Club of Sault Ste Marie North during the January 16th Board Meeting.  They shared that this donation will go a long way to support the ADSB robotics program.  Quite often ADSB teams secure spots in competitions outside of the Algoma District.  This funding will be very helpful in supporting travel to regional, provincial and in some instances national and world robotics competitions. 

 

The cheque presentation followed an overview of ADSB’s most recent VEX IQ Robotics Challenge which was held in SSM on January 9th.  Students from Boreal French Immersion Public School, FH Clergue French Immersion Public School, Korah Intermediate and Korah C&VS joined ADSB teacher Mark Carlucci at the Board Meeting to share how they have enjoyed taking part in robotics.  Many spoke about enjoying the cooperation and collaboration that is a signature part of robotics.  Others shared that taking part in robotics has helped them to build confidence in speaking publicly, as part of the competition requires them to take part in an interview.

École Sacré-Coeur theme day leads to an explosion of colour and laughter

 

At École Sacré-Cœur (Chapleau), the students who sit on the Student Council use their imagination to design creative monthly theme days.

 

The recently held face-painting day was a true explosion of colour and laughter. Under the creative guidance of the Student Council, the artists, who included both parents and students from the Student Council, transformed the activity into a memorable artistic adventure. The children were transformed into their favourite animals, superheroes and fantastic creatures. The classrooms rang with joy.

 

This activity helped to strengthen the links between teachers and students at École Sacré-Cœur in a friendly atmosphere. The painted faces, created with talent and creativity, became living symbols of individual expression and camaraderie, transforming an ordinary day into an extraordinary adventure at École Sacré-Cœur.

 

 

Une journée thématique à l’école Sacré-Coeur qui permet une explosion de couleurs et de rires

 

À l'école Sacré-Cœur (Chapleau) , les élèves qui siègent au Conseil des élèves utilisent leur imagination pour concevoir des journées thématiques mensuelles.

 

La journée de peinture de visage a permis une explosion de couleurs et de rires. Sous la responsabilité créative du Conseil des élèves, les artistes qui comprenaient à la fois des parents et les élèves du Conseil des élèves ont transformé l'activité en une aventure artistique mémorable. Les enfants se sont métamorphosés en leurs animaux préférés, super-héros et créatures fantastiques. Les salles résonnaient de joie.

 

Cette activité a permis de renforcer les liens entre enseignants et élèves de l'école Sacré-Cœur dans une ambiance chaleureuse. Les visages peints, réalisés avec talent et créativité, sont devenus des symboles vivants de l'expression individuelle et de la camaraderie, transformant une journée ordinaire en une aventure extraordinaire à l'école Sacré-Cœur.
