APH & TBDHU Report New COVID-19 Deaths, New Cases

More COVID-19 deaths have been confirmed in the region.

Algoma Public Health's reporting two in which COVID contributed to but was not the underlying cause of death, bringing the health unit's death toll since the pandemic began to 84, 63 in 2022 alone - it does not report where the deaths occurred.

It's also reporting thirteen new cases since Tuesday - seven in the Sault Ste. Marie area, three in Central and East Algoma, two in the Elliot Lake area, and another in North Algoma (which includes Wawa, Dubreuilville, White River, and the Michipicoten and Missinabie Cree First Nations) - though known "high risk active" cases are down slightly, to 63, with eight in hospital, two in ICUs.

The neighbouring Thunder Bay District Health Unit's reporting its 128th COVID-19 death, though it's giving no further details.

The health unit's also reporting 165 new COVID-19 cases over the last week, an increase from the previous week - it no longer reports "active" case counts, but shows 20 in hospital, two in ICUs.

Wawa's Community Christmas Returns This Weekend

Wawa's getting a little taste of Christmas this weekend.

Pauline Dawson of the Superior Children's Centre notes the Community Christmas is a long-running tradition.

Dawson explains there'll be a lot for children to do.

Dawson adds there's also face painting, snacks, draws with entries for every child, and special guests: Santa and Mrs. Claus with some elves.

Children must be accompanied by an adult to attend the Community Christmas, which runs from 1 pm to 4 pm Sunday afternoon, at Wawa's Legion Hall.

Shine the Light on Woman Abuse Campaign Ending

A local campaign in solidarity with abused women is set to wrap up for the year.

The "Shine the Light on Woman Abuse" campaign was launched last month, seeing Wawa decorated in purple to raise awareness of violence against women, show solidarity and support for abused women, and raise the profile of local agencies that can help abused women.

CHADWIC Home Program Supervisor Bonnie Ross explains purple has a special meaning.

The "Shine the Light on Woman Abuse" campaign ends tomorrow, which is Human Rights Day, the final day in the 16 Days of Action on Violence Against Women.

Float Registration Deadline for Wawa's Santa Claus Parade

As Santa Claus nears Wawa, organizers of the local Santa Claus Parade are reminding time's almost up to enter a float.

Municipal Recreation Coordinator Stacey White explains that - after two years of "stationary parades" - this year will see a return to tradition.

Floats must be registered by tomorrow - either by emailing mcoe@wawa.cc, or calling 705-856-2244, extension 240 - with Wawa's Santa Claus Parade to be held next Friday, December 16th, at 6 pm.

White also reminds the Festival of Lights is underway - participants will be turning on their lights every night through Sunday, December 18th.

PHSD Reports New COVID-19 Death, More Cases

Another COVID-19 death's been confirmed in the region.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is reporting a death in Greater Sudbury in which COVID was the underlying cause of death, bringing the health unit's death toll up to 193, including 167 in the city.

The health unit's also reporting 47 new cases since Monday - 35 in Greater Sudbury, eight in the broader Sudbury District, and four in the Manitoulin District - pushing known "active" cases up to 124 - 23 in hospital - with four "active" cases in the northern Sudbury District, double Monday's two - the communities aren't specified, but the region includes Chapleau, Cartier, Foleyet, Gogama, and neighbouring First Nations.

The neighbouring Porcupine Health Unit's reporting fourteen new cases over the last week - it no longer breaks that down by region or reports "active" case counts, but does show eleven in hospital, down from the fifteen reported a week ago.

Wawa & Chapleau Receiving Transit Funding Through Safe Restart Agreement

A couple local municipalities are getting support for transit.

Premier Doug Ford's announced up to $505-million for 107 municipalities across the province through Phase 4 of the federal-provincial Safe Restart Agreement, to help municipal transit systems address costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic between the start of February this year and the end of the year - the funds could be used to cover revenue losses, operating expenses, or provincial transit priority projects like fare and service integration and On-Demand transit.

Locally, Wawa's been allocated up to $5000 while Chapleau's allocated up to $7176 - Elliot Lake's set to get over $100,000, Sault Ste. Marie over $813,000, Timmins more than $233,000, Greater Sudbury over $1.2-million, and Thunder Bay more than $871,000.

Chapleau Piano Academy Receiving Recognition & Support From Hydro One

A Chapleau music instruction business is getting some support from Hydro One.

The power utility and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business have announced 28 recipients of the Hydro One Indigenous Entrepreneurship Grant, supporting a wide range of Indigenous-owned businesses across the province in "achiev[ing] business goals and energiz[ing] life in their communities".

While most have been awarded a $2500 grant - and membership in the CCAB - eight have been awarded a $7500 grant, including Kassey's Chapleau Piano Academy in Chapleau.

The Academy is set to present its Virtual Christmas Piano Recital on Thursday, December 22nd, streamed on YouTube at 7 pm that night.

Chapleau Holding Open House on Taste of the North Winter Carnival

Chapleau's starting preparations for the return of its annual winter carnival.

After two years cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Township of Chapleau says an open house to plan the Taste of the North Winter Carnival will be held tonight, encouraging residents to "help us make it a success", emphasizing "your voice matters".

The open house will be held at 7:00 pm tonight, in Council Chambers.

Bull Moose Shot & Abandoned Near Gogama

Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's asking for public help identifying who shot and abandoned a bull moose near Gogama.

The Ministry says conservation officers were alerted on November 11th of a dead moose south of Highway 560 near Westree, noting the moose had been shot and abandoned a few days earlier on Lampman Road in Lampman Township, off the Amyot Road south of Highway 560.

Wawa Thanked for Supporting Local Toy Drive for Christmas Hampers

The Wawa community's being thanked for supporting an annual effort to support children in the Wawa area this holiday season.

Wawa's Red Apple store wrapped up its annual toy drive on Saturday with a "Fill a Sleigh Day" featuring local emergency services, and have no confirmed the campaign raised $19,989.50, which manager Josee McCoy notes is 222% of the target for the multi-week initiative.

McCoy notes the funds raised included a $10,000 anonymous donation.

The drive supports the Wawa Christmas Hamper Fund, which is set to deliver the hampers to recipients December 15th.

More COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the region.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is reporting eighteen since Friday - seventeen in Greater Sudbury, another in the broader Sudbury District - though known "active" cases are down to 100 - 20 in hospital, one in an ICU - with two in the northern Sudbury District (Chapleau, Cartier, Foleyet, Gogama, and neighbouring First Nations), down from Friday's six.

The health unit's also removed four previously reported deaths in Greater Sudbury from its data - all of which had an unknown cause of death - bringing the health unit's death toll down to 192, 166 in the city.

Wawa Public Library Holding Silent Auction

The Wawa Public Library's putting a few items up for auction.

CEO and Head Librarian Sue Jarrell explains the library's trying something new, holding a silent auction over the next couple weeks, with a few items up for bid.

Jarrell notes funds raised through the auction will go toward "little extras" the library would like to get.

Starting today, bids can be made at the library until 2 pm on December 17th.

1 Dead After Single Vehicle Collision South of Chapleau

One person is dead after a single-vehicle collision south of Chapleau.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say they responded to the incident near the intersection of Highways 129 and 667 - about 40 kilometres south of Chapleau - around 4:12 pm Sunday afternoon, confirming one person was dead as a result of the collision.

While 129's since reopened between Chapleau and Thessalon, the investigation's continuing with assistance from the Northeast Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team.

Deceased in Fatal Hwy 17 Collision Identified as Wawa Firefighter

More details are emerging about last week's fatal collision on Highway 17, near the intersection with 519.

Superior East OPP have confirmed the person killed in the crash was 33-year-old Christian - or Chris - Casavant, a member of the Wawa Fire Department and worker at Alamos Gold, who was also involved in mine rescue.

Police say Casavant was the passenger in a northbound pickup truck that collided with a southbound commercial motor vehicle around 5:47 pm last Tuesday evening, and he was pronounced dead at the scene while the pickup's driver - who has not been publicly identified - was taken to hospital for injuries now described as "non-life-threatening" - the tractor-trailer's driver was not injured.

The investigation's continuing - with assistance from the Northeast Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team - and police ask any potential witnesses - including anyone who was in the area of the collision between 5 pm and 5:45 pm that evening - to call the OPP or Crime Stoppers.

MVFA Cash Draw's Early Bird Draw Nears

A lucky supporter of Wawa's firefighters will soon be $1000 richer.

The Michipicoten Volunteer Firefighters' Association's annual cash draw is set to have its "Early Bird" draw next weekend, and Past President Kyle Ouellet reminds ticket sales support the firefighters.

The "Early Bird" draw will be made Saturday night, and Ouellet notes the winning ticket will be re-entered for the next draw on Valentine's Day, and the final draws at the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby.

Fill a Sleigh Event Wraps Toy Drive Supporting Wawa Christmas Hampers

An annual effort to support children in the Wawa area this holiday season came to a close over the weekend.

Josee McCoy - manager of Wawa's Red Apple store - explains Saturday's "Fill a Sleigh Day" with local emergency services was the culmination of a multi-week toy drive.

Emphasizing the local police are happy to join in - as it's a "worthwhile cause", helping out families in need - Superior East OPP Constable Ashley Nickle says response to the event was "amazing".

Wawa Fire Department Deputy Chief Pierre Gauthier is appreciative of the support seen Saturday.

The firefighters were also out Sunday - with staff from St. Augustine French Immersion school - collecting food for the Christmas Hampers, which will be going out December 15th.
