Snowmobiler Survives Cold Water Exposure on Manitowik Lake

A snowmobiler suffered only "non-life-threatening" injuries after their snowmachine went through the ice near Wawa.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say they responded to the report of an overdue snowmobiler in the Manitowik Lake area Friday night, assisted by a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officer.

Attempts to find the missing person with snowmobiles were unsuccessful, but an aerial search the next morning noted a snowmobile track along the frozen lake surface onto a "vast expanse of open water".

A further search spotted a set of tracks and a helmet on the ice over a kilometre away from where the sled initially went onto open water, and a large plume of smoke was later detected on the shoreline, where the person was standing outside a cabin with the letters "SOS" written in coffee grounds on the snow.

They were taken to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
