The Wawa Municipal Accommodation Tax Fund is funded by a 4% surcharge on stays at hotels, motels, airBnBs, and bed & breakfasts within Wawa - half of the funds raised through the "MAT" go to municipal coffers but can only be used for "tourism-related purposes" while the other half is administered by the Superior East Community Futures Development Corporation with the MAT Committee (which is made up of accommodation operators, representatives of the tourism sector, and a municipal representative, who can direct the funds to support tourism-related activities, marketing campaigns, and infrastructure improvements that benefit both residents and visitors"), which is where these funds came from.
