Reopening Efforts Underway for Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre

Reopening efforts have begun at Wawa's Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre.
Community Services and Tourism Director Alex Patterson explains the facility's in the process of a "slow, phased-in" reopening - as approved by Council - starting with youth recreation programming, which traditionally makes up "the bulk" of the facility's evening programming and has been set as the top priority by Council.

That will be followed by the addition of seniors' recreation programming - which usually happens during the day - also to be phased-in over two weeks, followed by the third phase - which adds in adult recreation - also to happen over two weeks, though Patterson notes there's a level of uncertainty surrounding the later phases.

The fourth and final phase of the plan would allow "private and commercial rentals" - expected toward the end of November - though Patterson says "alternatives" are being explored, noting how the annual Fall Fair "essentially transformed" into last weekend's Goose Nest Market event.

As part of the reopening, staff have started ice-making in the rink - after receiving a key part earlier this week - with the ice expected to be ready just after Thanksgiving.

APH is reminding residents to practice physical distancing - as any close contact could be a possible exposure - further emphasizing that masks or face coverings must be worn in all indoor public spaces in Algoma - as well as other settings where physical distancing can't be maintained - and to follow size limits for social gatherings.
The neighbouring Thunder Bay District Health Unit's also confirmed a new case, its 107th, which is located in the Thunder Bay area - this leaves that health unit with three "active" cases, as well.
Public Health Sudbury and Districts still has six active cases out of the 108 it has reported, while the neighbouring Porcupine Health Unit has three out of 83 still active.

COVID-19 Pandemic Cancels This Year's Wawa & Chapleau Ice Fishing Derbies and MVFA Annual Cash Draw

A group of popular local traditions have been cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Wawa Ice Fishing Derby's Board has announced the 30th annual event is being postponed to March 2022, with a release stating the derby's operated with four "prime purposes": promoting fishing, tourism, and economic development in Wawa and surrounding area, but also promoting quality of life - and that's "the highest concern", with the "continuing uncertainty" of the outbreak leading to the derby's postponement.
They further note the 2020 derby was "a great success" with more than 1300 participants, with the board looking forward to celebrating the 30th derby "in an even more special way".
Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Chapleau's announced the "painful decision" to postpone the 2021 Chapleau Pike Ice Fishing Derby until February 2022.
Club President Luc Tessier says the decision was made in a unanimous vote by the club, as this is normally the time when preparations would begin - especially to obtain the truck for the annual draw - but there is too much uncertainty.

Tessier adds one of the main problems the club faced related to insurance.

Tessier expresses hope for the 2022 event, but notes the main factor will likely be whether there's an approved COVID-19 vaccine that will work well.
The club's also noted it is looking into ways to continue supporting Chapleau, such as another fundraising event like a draw, but nothing is confirmed at this time.
Back in Wawa, the Michipicoten Volunteer Firefighter's Association annual cash draw has been called off for this year, with a statement from the association's executive noting that many events have been cancelled this year, while social distancing and the transferring of cash and tickets at various businesses and events "would be impossible for everyone's safety and well-being", though the association is looking to return for the 2021-22 draw.
