Chapleau Pentecostal Church is encouraging everyone to help support children in Haiti, as the church holds modified versions of its annual Haiti Dinner and Auction.

PHSD Urges Everyone to Avoid "Twindemic" By Getting Flu Shot

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is urging everyone to help avoid a "twindemic".
Warning the annual influenza epidemic's on "a collision course" with the COVID-19 pandemic, the health unit is encouraging everyone at least six months of age to get their flu shot, to stay healthy and avoid overwhelming the health care system.
While the shot doesn't protect against COVID-19, the health unit emphasizes having COVID-19 and the flu close together - or at the same time - could put you at higher risk for severe illness, and encourages everyone to get the flu shot as soon as possible, noting it can take up to two weeks for your body to build immunity to the flu viruses included in the vaccine.

APH Confirms 41st COVID-19 Case

Another COVID-19 case has been reported in Algoma.
Algoma Public Health says its 41st case is self-isolating after being tested on Sunday - it's unknown how they were exposed, considered evidence of ongoing community spread in Sault Ste. Marie and area, where all but five of Algoma's cases have been located.
This leaves Algoma with two "active cases".
It comes after Public Health Sudbury and Districts confirmed its 114th case, leaving it with four "active" - all in Greater Sudbury - while the Porcupine Health Unit confirmed its 92nd case, leaving it with five "active" - two are self-isolating outside of the health unit's region.
The neighbouring Thunder Bay District Health Unit has no active cases at this time.

Another COVID-19 case has been reported in Sudbury.
Public Health Sudbury and Districts says its 114th case is a Greater Sudbury resident who was exposed by contact with a case of unknown exposure.
This leaves the health unit with four "active" cases, all in Greater Sudbury.
The neighbouring Porcupine Health Unit - meanwhile - has confirmed its 92nd case, currently outside of the health unit's region - the health unit currently has five "active" cases, two self-isolating outside of its region.
Algoma Public Health still has one "active" case, while the neighbouring Thunder Bay District Health Unit has none.

Dubreuilville Council Selects New Councillor to Fill Vacancy

Dubreuilville should soon have a new councillor.
Two long-time residents, Patrick Sigouin and Gerard Joseph Levesque, had put their names forward to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Leandre Moore in August, with Levesque unanimously chosen by Council in their most recent meeting.
The choice is set to be confirmed in a by-law in Council's next meeting (on Wednesday, October 28th), with Levesque to be sworn-in that evening - he'll serve the remainder of the Council term, which ends in November 2022.

Chapleau High School Graduate Honoured for Academic Performance

A Chapleau high school grad's being honoured with a special award for his performance last school year.
The Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon says Patrick St-Amand of Ecole secondaire catholique Trillium in Chapleau is the recipient of the Governor General's Academic Medal for the 2019-2020 academic year.
It recognizes St-Amand's "dedication to his studies" and "exceptional knowledge", as the medal's awarded to the student graduating Grade 12 with the highest average.

Mischief Charge After Domestic Dispute in Wawa

A mischief charge has been laid over an incident in Wawa.
Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say officers were called to Mission Road around 9 o'clock yesterday morning, with investigating determining vandalism occurred as a result of an early morning domestic dispute, leading to the arrest of a 33-year-old Wawa resident on a charge of mischief under $5000.
They've been released from custody, with a future court date.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts says its 113th case is a Greater Sudbury resident who was tested Monday - their infection is travel-related.
They're one of three "active" cases for the health unit.
Algoma Public Health still has one "active" case, while the Porcupine Health Unit has four and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has none.

Impaired Driving Charges Laid Against Wawa Man

Erratic driving's led to impaired driving charges for a Wawa man.
Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say an officer observed a pickup truck swerving into the oncoming lane on Churchill Avenue Friday evening, prompting a traffic stop - the officer determined the driver was impaired by alcohol, charging him with operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
The 57-year-old's been released from custody with a future court date, though he's also been issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle's impounded for seven days.

Two Charged With Staying in Remote Cabin Near Wawa Without Permission

Two people are facing charges after a break-in near Wawa.
Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say officers were called to Tremblay Road last Wednesday, with investigation revealing two people - a 25-year-old from Kitchener and a 27-year-old from Wawa - had been staying in a remote cabin without the owner's permission.
The pair - who were also on conditions not to communicate with one another - were discovered a few hours later, leading to their arrest on charges of unlawfully in dwelling house and failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court.
The Kitchener resident's been released with a future court date, while the Wawa resident - who has also been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 - was remanded into custody, pending a bail hearing.

OPP Ask for Public Help Finding Missing Batchewana FN Man

Ontario Provincial Police are asking for public help finding a missing Batchewana First Nation man.
Sault Ste. Marie OPP say 29-year-old Trent Agawa was reported missing last week, as he hasn't been seen or heard from since the middle of August and his family and police are concerned for his well-being.
Agawa's described as about six feet tall, weighing 196 pounds, with brown eyes and shoulder-length straight black hair.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to call police.

Chapleau Restarts Municipal Transit Services

Chapleau's restarting municipal transit services.
The Township says - starting today - transit bus services run 8:45 am to 2:45 pm weekdays, closed from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm Monday to Thursday and 12 to 12:45 Friday.
Passengers must wear face coverings at all time during travel, maintain physical distancing, and carry and use your own alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Those requiring assistance with a mobility device are asked to bring someone to assist - at no additional cost - while those presenting new symptoms of COVID-19 are asked not to board.

Wawa Council Holding Back-to-Back Meetings

Wawa Municipal Council will discuss Halloween and many more topics in back-to-back meetings tonight.
First up is a Corporate Planning Committee, which includes a COVID-19 update with guidelines for Halloween, along with discussion about a draft Code of Conduct for Employees, the municipal procurement policy, the Golf Club's licence to occupy, and a vulnerable persons registry.
That will be followed by a regular Council meeting, which includes a staff report on the procurement policy, as well as a by-law for an agreement with the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre and Acorn Information Solutions for the vulnerable persons registry.
Chapleau Council approved a similar agreement last week.
There's also a single "in-camera" item, a legal issue relating to staffing.
Aside from the "in camera" portion, the meetings will be livestreamed on the Municipality of Wawa's YouTube channel, starting at 6:30 tonight.

Wawa Curling Registration Continuing

Registration for Wawa's curlers is continuing tonight.
A second registration event's being held for Wawa's Men's, Ladies, and Mixed Curling Leagues tonight - from 6:30 to 8 in the Curling Lounge of the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre.

Wesdome Expects to Meet Full Year Guidance Despite Q3 Dip

Despite a production slow down over the last quarter, Wesdome Gold Mines says it's confident it'll hit full year guidance at a local gold complex.
The Toronto-based miner says just over 20,000 ounces were produced at the Eagle River underground mine and Mishi open pit during the third quarter of the year, down from the previous quarter's more than 25,000 ounces and the third quarter of last year - which saw nearly 29,000 - though Wesdome points to annual planned mill maintenance and the upgrade of the hoist control system at Eagle River.
That brings 2020 production-to-date over 70,000 ounces, in line to reach this year's guidance of 90,000 to 100,000 ounces.
Wesdome also notes the amount of ore milled was up - surpassing 56,000 tonnes - with Mishi seeing a 5553 percent increase over the third quarter of 2019.

OPP Ask for Public Help After Firearms Taken in Aweres Township Break-In

Ontario Provincial Police are asking for public help after firearms were taken in a break-and-enter at an Aweres Township residence.
Sault Ste. Marie OPP say the incident happened sometime between October 9th and 16th, at a residence on Linden Drive in Aweres Township, with a 308 Bolt Action Browning Rifle, a 32 Lever Action Winchester Rifle, and a pellet gun stolen, along with an assortment of jewellery.
Anyone with information's urged to call police or Crime Stoppers.

Good news for Wawa curlers: registration starts tonight.
Organizers are holding two events so teams and curlers can sign up for the Men's, Ladies, or Mixed Leagues, the first running from 6:30 to 8 o'clock tonight, the second from 6:30 to 8 tomorrow night - both will be held in the curling lounge of the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre, though everyone's reminded to wear a mask and follow COVID-19 measures.
