Chapleau's renewing recruitment efforts for a new top administrator.

Following "in-camera" discussions about recruitment of a Chief Administrative Officer during this week's Chapleau Council meeting, Mayor Michael Levesque says the Township's again casting out the call for applicants.

Mayor Levesque admits that means a new CAO may not be chosen until next year - he's previously noted an "arrangement" with the previous CAO, who is "carrying the fort" at this time and "available for the transition".

Chapleau Council Considers Pair of Committee of Adjustment Items

Mayor Michael Levesque explains the Township's consultants cleared the requests.

Mayor Levesque notes neighbouring properties will be notified about the latter item, to see if there are any objections, otherwise the request is likely to be approved in a future Council meeting.

Algoma Reports Another New COVID-19 Case

Another COVID-19 case has been reported in Algoma.

Algoma Public Health says its 43rd case is located in the Sault Ste. Marie area, though it's unknown how they were infected, considered evidence of ongoing community spread in the Sault area.

This leaves Algoma with three "active" cases, all in the Sault area.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts - which confirmed its 125th case Monday night - still have twelve "active" - all in Greater Sudbury - while the neighbouring Porcupine Health Unit has five, and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has four, all in the Thunder Bay area.

New COVID-19 Case Confirmed in Sudbury

Another COVID-19 case has been confirmed in Sudbury.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts says its 125th case stems from close contact with another confirmed case - combined with one new recovery, it leaves the health unit with twelve "active" cases, all in Greater Sudbury.

That's the most in the region, as the Porcupine Health Unit currently has five "active", the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has four - all in the Thunder Bay area - and Algoma Public Health has two, both in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

Wawa Council Holding Special Meeting

Wawa Municipal Council will discuss a few items in a special meeting tonight.

Included on the agenda is a project update from Lakeshore Natural Gas, a resolution for a Phase 2 application for funding assistance under the Safe Restart Agreement, and a by-law respecting a Site Plan Control Area for the construction of temporary housing units.

The meeting will be broadcast on the Muncipality of Wawa's YouTube page, starting at 6:30 pm tonight.

PHSD and Neighbouring Health Units Confirm More COVID-19 Cases

More COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the region.

Just hours after declaring an outbreak at a Greater Sudbury high school which has seen three cases, Public Health Sudbury and Districts has confirmed its 124th case, stemming from close contact with another confirmed case - it leaves the health unit with twelve "active" cases, all in Greater Sudbury.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit's also reporting a new case, its 115th, also stemming from close contact with a known case - this leaves that health unit with five "active" cases, all in the Thunder Bay area.

Meanwhile, Algoma Public Health has two "active" cases - both in the Sault Ste. Marie area - while the Porcupine Health Unit has seven "active".

APH Confirms 42nd COVID-19 Case

Another COVID-19 case has been reported in Algoma.

Algoma Public Health says its 42nd case is located in the Sault Ste. Marie area and stems from close contact with a known case - they're self-isolating after they were tested Sunday.

This leaves Algoma with three "active" cases, all in the Sault area.

This comes as Public Health Sudbury and Districts has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at a Greater Sudbury high school, which has seen three cases - the health unit reported five new cases over the weekend, for a total of 123 - eleven of which are "active", all in Greater Sudbury.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring Porcupine Health Unit confirmed its 94th and 95th cases, both in the Hearst and Hornepayne area - it has eight "active", including four in the Hearst and Hornepayne area and two self-isolating outside of its region - and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit confirmed four, all in the Thunder Bay area - it has reported 114, four of which are "active".

Chapleau Council Set to Hold Meeting

Chapleau Council's set to hold its final meeting of the month.

Included on the agenda for tonight's regular meeting are a pair of "Committee of Adjustment" items, a by-law to rezone lands at 30 Planer Road, and resolutions about: handicapped parking on Birch Street; a purchase order for sanitary and storm drain cleanouts; an amendment to the budget for landfill seeding; public notification about a vacancy on the library board; and considering an amended nomination for the "Buddy" Swanson Volunteer Recognition Award.

There's also two "in-camera" items, one relating to "advice that is subject to solicitor-client privilege" about the Dufferin Street project, the other "concerning labour relations or employee negotiations related to the recruitment of a Chief Administrative Officer".

Chapleau's AW Moore Arena Reopening

Chapleau's reopening its arena after months closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An update on the Township's website notes the AW Moore Arena's "opening by stages" starting with ice time for the Figure Skating Club and Chapleau Minor Hockey, with the second stage to allow other user groups to resume ice time and private rentals of the Communty Hall - timing for that stage will depend on the "evolving situation with COVID-19".

Wawa's Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre started reopening earlier this month, with a four-phase process laid out, starting with a focus on youth recreation, then seniors programming, then adult recreation, and finally commercial use.

Arrest After Wawa Motel Staff Discover Unpaid Guest

Local police have made an arrest after staff at a Wawa motel discovered an unpaid guest sleeping in a room.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say officers responded to a trespass call on Mission Road around 10:30 Friday morning, advised the accused fled the scene before police arrived, though they were located shortly after.

The 28-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie was charged with unlawfully in dwelling house", then released from custody with a future court date.

Wawa Mayor Touts Progress on Pair of Major Projects

Major progress has been made on a pair of Wawa projects.

Mayor Ron Rody's happy to announce that the multi-year Waterfront Project is done.

Mayor Rody also touts progress on the Connecting Link project, resurfacing and altering Mission Road and Main Street - though he warns there's a big change ahead, when the lines are painted.

Rody also notes there will be two activated pedestrian crossings on Mission Road - at Churchill and at Magpie - and reminds drivers that the curb has been extended at the intersection with Broadway Avenue, to make it safer for pedestrians to cross, with a shorter distance to walk.

Breaching Conditions Arrest After Wawa Dispute

A Wawa man's facing a charge of breaching conditions after a dispute in town.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police were called to the dispute on Mission Road around 8:30 Thursday morning, with subsequent investigation revealing the accused had breached one of their court-ordered conditions.

Police arrested the 33-year-old on a charge of failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court, though he's been released with a future court date.

Chapleau COVID Assessment Centre Reminds of Updated Testing Guidelines

Chapleau's COVID-19 Assessment Centre are reminding of updating testing guidelines.

While guidelines previously recommended low risk or asymptomatic individuals should be tested, the centre notes the province updated guidelines a month ago, only recommending testing if you are: showing COVID-19 symptoms; have been exposed to a confirmed case according to your health unit or the COVID Alert app; a resident or worker in a setting with a confirmed COVID-19 outbreak; or eligible for testing as part of a targeted initiative by the Ministries of Health or Long-Term Care.

The centre works by appointment only - phone lines are open at 705-864-2568 between 8:30 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, though appointments are booked between 12 noon and 4 pm Monday to Thursday or 9 am to 1 pm Friday.

Chapleau Resident Charged With Failure to Comply After Domestic Dispute

A Chapleau resident's been charged in a domestic dispute.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say officers were called to a Chapleau residence early Friday morning, with investigation leading to the arrest of a 57-year-old on a charge of failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court.

They've been released with a future court date.

Meanwhile, the Porcupine Health Unit's confirmed its 93rd case, located in the Hearst or Hornepayne area - it leaves the health unit with six "active" cases, two of which are self-isolating outside of its region.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit's also reported a new case in the Thunder Bay area, the health unit's 110th and only "active" case.
This comes a day after Algoma Public Health reported its 41st case, warning the case of "unknown" exposure is evidence of ongoing community spread in Sault Ste. Marie and area, where all but five of Algoma's cases have been located.
Algoma currently has two "active" cases.

Northern Lights Ford Scares Hunger Visiting John's Valu-Mart As Campaign Nears End

A Wawa car dealership's taking its "Hunger Wagon" on the road to help "scare hunger".
Danette Mathias of Northern Lights Ford explains the move's part of the annual "Northern Lights Ford Scares Hunger" campaign supporting the Wawa Food Bank - and she notes the campaign has been welcomed by other parts of the community.

Emphasizing "together, let's put a mask on hunger", Mathias notes the "Hunger Wagon" will be at John's Valu-Mart from 10 to 1 tomorrow, though non-perishable food donations are also accepted at Northern Lights Ford all month, with donors able to win a $25 gift card.

Wawa Seeking Members for Marina Advisory Committee

The Municipality of Wawa's looking for members for a new committee focused on the marina.
While Community Services and Tourism Director Alex Patterson says an informal committee's existed for some time, he's recommended formalizing it as part of efforts to gain full ownership of the marina.

Patterson says the Municipality's looking for five people who use the marina, hoping for diversity of experience, including types of boat they have and how long they've used the facility.
