PHSD Monitoring Intestinal Illness Outbreaks Outside of Region

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is assuring it is monitoring the outbreak of an intestinal illness possibly linked to imported lettuce.

The health unit says it's "closely" watching the US outbreak of cyclosporiasis and a "potentially-related" outbreak in Quebec, emphasizing "at this time, no increase in the number of infections...has been reported" in the Sudbury and districts area - while one infection was reported this year, that was linked to international travel, and down from the three reported last year, though it notes infections occur in Canada every year and are usually linked to international travel.

Usually appearing about seven days after eating or drinking contaminated food or water, symptoms range from diarrhea, loss of appetite, bloating, and flatulence to nausea, tiredness, and fever - while most people recover on their own, symptoms can persist for weeks or months if untreated, so if you experience those symptoms, get advice from a health care provider.

As the intestinal illness is caused by a microscopic parasite, the health unit encourages people to reduce risk by washing hands well with soap and water, washing gruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them, and if you choose to reduce raw fresh fruit and vegetable consumption to avoid gastrointestinal illnesses, increase cooked fruit and vegetable consumption to ensure you still get enough vitamins and fibre.

After reaching Wawa on Tuesday, Sward's continuing toward Sault Ste. Marie, averaging around 40 to 50 kilometres a day - his journey can be followed at "Million Bottle Pledge" on Facebook, where he noted in a post on Tuesday that it has been "slow going south of town" due to "lots of roadside trash...such as styrofoam and plastics that fall out of the work trucks" on the way to the landfill but "the incredible amount of intentional litter of plastic bottles and tin cans is a bit disappointing", as he picked up "over 225...in a 5 kilometre stretch".

Crow Tests Positive for West Nile in Espanola Area

A local health unit's warning about the dangers of West Nile virus as a bird's tested positive in the Espanola area.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts says it has received confirmation an American Crow tested positive - the first to do so in its region this year, though two birds did test positive last year.

While the health unit emphasizes the last human case in its area was in 2023, it says the bird testing positive reminds that "although the overall risk of a person becoming infected is low, the virus is still present", urging precautions such as wearing Health Canada-approved insect repellent and light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing, ensuring there are no holes or tears in screen doors and windows of your home, and removing - or changing weekly - standing water around your home.

Ballots Set for Local Municipal Elections, Though Dubreuilville Acclaims Whole Slate

Ballots are set for this year's municipal elections, with several candidates in the running - except in one local community.

The Municipality of Wawa's list of certified candidates shows two for mayor - incumbent Melanie Pilon, who's seeking a second term, and Sportsman Motel owner Ray Vaillant - and nine people vying for four councillor positions: incumbents Cathy Cannon and Mitch Hatfield, who are seeking their second and third terms, respectively; plus Colton Liddle, Shah Mohamed, Jason North, Ron Ouellette, Eric Paquette, Brandon Smit, and James Stewart.

Luc Tessier was acclaimed as French Separate School Board trustee, a role he's held several years.

Residents of the Township of Dubreuilville won't need to cast ballots, as it saw the bare minimum number of candidates, with Beverly Nantel acclaimed for a third term as mayor - she was acclaimed both prior times, as well - while Laurent Blais, Lany Champagne Tremblay, Caitlin Chicoine, and Laurianne Lavoie were acclaimed as councillors - an entirely new group - with retired teacher Léo Raymond acclaimed as French Public School Board trustee - representing a wide area, including Wawa, Chapleau, and White River, as well - while Roger Lemoyne was acclaimed as French Separate board trustee for Dubreuilville and Hornepayne, a role he's held more than 20 years.

A boil water advisory in Wawa has been lifted.

The Municipality's announced that "recent water samples collected and analyzed were found to be in compliance with provincial regulations" so the advisory issued last Wednesday, August 19th - along Superior Street, Regina Crescent, Poplar Street, and Birch Street - was rescinded on Monday, with Algoma Public Health approving the lifting of restrictions on using the municipal water supply.
