Dubreuilville's RCMD Contracting Getting $352k from NOHFC

A Dubreuilville business is getting some provincial support.

The Ontario government's announced more than $1.9-million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for seven projects that "support and strengthen the forestry and mining sectors in Northern Ontario".

That includes $352,226 for Dubreuilville road maintenance, road building, and heavy equipment construction company RCMD Contracting to purchase unspecified equipment.

Also receiving support are a wood harvesting company in Geraldton and an Echo Bay heavy equipment repair, maintenance, and fabrication business.

The government's also announced more than $1.4-million from the NOHFC for Echo Bay's Springer Aerospace, to expand its operations.

Toronto-Area Residents Charged After White River RIDE Stop

Two Toronto-area residents have been charged after a RIDE stop near White River.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say officers conducting a RIDE checkpoint on Highway 17 in Vasiloff Township last Tuesday afternoon detected the odour of cannabis emanating from a stopped SUV, leading to a search that yielded "small quantities" of suspected cannabis and cocaine, as well as over $67,000 in currency.

Officers arrested a 25-year-old York man and a 29-year-old Brampton man on charges of possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5000, though the York man's also been charged with drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available, four counts of failure to comply with undertaking, and three counts of failure to comply with release order - he was been remanded into custody, pending a bail hearing, while the Brampton man was released with an April court date.

APH Reports Rising COVID-19 Cases

Algoma Public Health's reporting rising COVID-19 cases in the region.

The health unit's added 61 in the Sault Ste. Marie area, eight in Central and East Algoma, three in the Elliot Lake area, and four in North Algoma - which includes Wawa, Dubreuilville, White River, and the Michipicoten and Missinabie Cree First Nations - leaving it with 401 known "active" cases - plus four "non-resident cases temporarily in Algoma" - with sixteen local cases in hospital, four in ICUs.

"Walk-in" vaccination clinics are being held at Wawa's Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre from 10 am to 1 pm today and at Dubreuilville's Eddy K. Lefrancois Recreation Centre tomorrow, from 1 pm to 3 pm, while an "appointment only" clinic will be held for five to eleven year-olds through White River's Northern Neighbours Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic tomorrow.

Assault & Other Charge Over Wawa Domestic Dispute

An assault charge has been laid after a Wawa domestic dispute.

Superior East Ontario Provincial Police say they responded to an incident on Hillcrest Avenue around 1:34 last Thursday afternoon, with investigation leading to the arrest of a Wawa 26-year-old on charges of spousal assault and fail to comply with probation order.

They've been released from custody, with an April date at Wawa's Ontario Court of Justice.

PHSD Reports 122nd COVID-19 Death, More Cases for APH

Public Health Sudbury and Districts is reporting its 122nd COVID-19 death.

The health unit's giving few details, though figures show its the 111th death in the Greater Sudbury area, and the 88th in which COVID-19 was the "underlying cause of death".

It's also reporting 90 cases in Greater Sudbury since Friday plus four in the Sudbury District and four in the Manitoulin District, leaving it with 268 known "active" cases - including nine in the northern Sudbury District, which includes Chapleau, Cartier, Foleyet, Gogama, and neighbouring First Nations - with 37 cases in hospital, one in an ICU.

PHSD is holding an "appointment only" vaccination clinic at its Chapleau office Thursday.

Meanwhile, Algoma Public Health's added 104 cases in the Sault Ste. APH Reports 41st COVID-19 Death, More Cases for PHSD

Another COVID-19 death's been confirmed in the region.

Algoma Public Health reported its 41st death from the illness on Friday - three days after its 40th - though it gave no further details.

It also reported 37 new cases in the Sault Ste. Marie area, five in the Elliot Lake area, two in Central and East Algoma, and two in North Algoma - which includes Wawa, Dubreuilville, White River, and the Michipicoten and Missinabie Cree First Nations - leaving it with 378 known "active" cases - plus two "non-resident cases temporarily in Algoma" - with sixteen cases in hospital, two in ICUs.

Meanwhile, Public Health Sudbury and Districts added 88 new cases in Greater Sudbury, twelve in the Sudbury District, and seven in the Manitoulin District, leaving it with 331 "active" - including fourteen in the northern Sudbury District, which includes Chapleau, Cartier, Foleyet, Gogama, and neighbouring First Nations - while 54 cases are in hospital, one in an ICU.

APH, TBDHU & PHU Report New COVID-19 Cases

Algoma Public Health's added 51 new cases in the Sault Ste. Marie area, seven in Central and East Algoma, and two in the Elliot Lake area, leaving it with 415 "active" - plus two "non-resident cases temporarily in Algoma" - with fourteen local cases in hospital, five in ICUs.

The neighbouring Thunder Bay District Health Unit's added 79 - 64 in the Thunder Bay area since Wednesday, plus twelve in unspecified First Nation communities and three in unspecified district communities - leaving it with 166 "active", 29 in hospital, six in ICUs.

The Porcupine Health Unit's added 22 - fourteen in the James and Hudson Bay region, four in the Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, and Smooth Rock Falls area, two in the Kapuskasing, Opasatika, Val Rita-Harty, Moonbeam, and Fauquier-Strickland area, and two in the Timmins area - leaving it with 276 "active", ten in hospital, two in ICUs.

Chapleau Council Approves New Policy for Expense Reimbursement

Chapleau Town Council's approved a new policy on reimbursement of expenses for Council and staff.

Mayor Michael Levesque explains the new policy by-law simply sets out some standard guidelines.

It's the second compensation-related policy by-law approved over the last month, after another relating to remuneration was passed in February - the two were originally dealt with under one by-law, but they were split up as Council considered updates.

Chapleau Council Approves Plan for Backup Power Amid Emergency

Chapleau Town Council's approved a new plan for backup power amid an emergency.

Mayor Michael Levesque explains that the original plan was to adapt the backup power system for both the Civic and Recreation centres, but a look at the costs and funding available led to a different solution.

With that plan now decided, a tender package will be issued to move forward on the project.

Chapleau Council Approves Updated Parking By-Law, Shortening Downtown Time Limit

Chapleau's hoping to free up downtown parking spots by getting vehicles out of them more often.

Mayor Michael Levesque explains Council's approved an updated parking and traffic by-law, which lowers the time limit for parking in the downtown core.

Levesque's also encouraging businesses and land owners to work together to help address the situation, as well.

Details of the updated by-law are available through the Township.

3 Chapleau Firefighters Honoured for Long Service

A trio of Chapleau firefighters have been honoured for long service to the community.

Mayor Michael Levesque says the presentation of service medals had long been delayed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, finally able to occur in last Monday's meeting.

Mayor Levesque congratulates the three, noting - combined - they amount to 75 to 80 years of service with the local fire department.

PHSD Reports 2 New COVID-19 Deaths

More COVID-19 deaths have been confirmed in the region.

The latest figures from Public Health Sudbury and Districts show two more deaths in Greater Sudbury, bringing the health unit's COVID-related death toll to 121 - these latest two are noted to be cases in which COVID-19 contributed to but was not the underlying cause of death.

It's also reporting 68 new cases in Greater Sudbury plus eleven in the Sudbury District and five in the Manitoulin District, leaving it with 335 known "active" cases, 50 in hospital, two in ICUs.

The health unit is holding an "appointment only" vaccination clinic at its Chapleau office today.

Meanwhile, Algoma Public Health's added 31 new cases in the Sault Ste. Marie area, three in Central and East Algoma, and two in the Elliot Lake area, leaving it with 371 "active", fifteen in hospital, five in ICUs.

NOHFC Announces Funding for Wawa Legion's Lift

The Wawa Legion's getting some provincial support for its lift.

The Ontario government's announced the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation's providing more than $5.5-million for 23 projects across the North, including $32,924.57 for construction and installation of a "barrier-free lift" at Wawa's Legion Hall.

Wawa's Royal Canadian Legion Branch 429 did open its lift for use in February 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic cut down on events held at the Legion Hall.

Other projects receiving support include the installation of a new chairlift, pond, pump house and ski patrol building at Searchmont Ski Resort.

Algoma Public Health's reporting its 40th COVID-19 death.

The health unit's giving no further details about the death - it reported its 39th on Friday.

It's also reporting 62 new cases in the Sault Ste. Marie area, five in Central and East Algoma, and two in the Elliot Lake area, leaving it with 376 known "active" cases, fourteen in hospital, five in ICUs - all up from the previous day.

Lady Dunn Health Centre Loosening Visiting Restrictions

Wawa's Lady Dunn Health Centre is "cautiously" loosening visitation restrictions.

Citing recent changes announced by the provincial government, the hospital says it is "cautiously" reopening general visitation to its Acute and Long-Term Care units immediately, allowing fully vaccinated visitors who've completed required testing to visit between 8 am and 8 pm, though they'll have to undergo screening and follow measures such as hand hygiene and wearing a surgical mask.

Children under 5 years of age will be allowed, and while they won't be required to show proof of vaccination - no vaccine's been approved for that age range at this time - they will need COVID-19 testing prior to entry.

Social absences for long-term care residents and acute care ALC patients are now permitted, while exceptions to the visitation policy for palliative care will be allowed for emergency or compassionate reasons.

WMC to Vote on Budget, Discuss Other Items in Back-to-Back Meetings

Wawa Municipal Council's set to vote on its proposed multi-year budget as it holds a pair of meetings tonight.

First up is a Corporate Planning Committee meeting, including a presentation from Johanna Rowe of the Wawa Heritage Committee, plus discussion about handicap parking, multi-year budgets, and the vesting of properties.

That'll be followed by a regular meeting, which includes resolutions to extend ice season, approve waiver of facility rental fee for the Wawa ice Fishing Derby, and accept a resignation from the Drag Race Commitee, as well as budget-related by-laws and other by-laws appointing a "weed inspector" and approving the use of internet and telephone voting for this year's municipal and school board elections.

There's also an "in-camera" item: a legal issue relating to the sale of property.

Once again open for the public to attend in person - if masked - the meetings will be held back-to-back, starting at 6:30 pm tonight.

The health unit's giving few details, though figures show its the 108th death in the Greater Sudbury area - the health unit last reported a COVID death on Friday.

It's also reporting 98 cases in Greater Sudbury since Friday plus eight in the Sudbury District and eleven in the Manitoulin District, leaving it with 338 known "active" cases - including twelve in the northern Sudbury District, which includes Chapleau, Cartier, Foleyet, Gogama, and neighbouring First Nations - with 67 in hospital, two in ICUs.

Meanwhile, Algoma Public Health's added 111 cases in the Sault Ste. Marie area since Friday, plus four in Central and East Algoma, and five in the Elliot Lake area, while the number in North Algoma's actually been reduced by one.
